Surah Al Falaq
Surah Number: 113
Revelation Period: Madani
Number of Verses: 5
Translation:
Al-Falaq – The Daybreak
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
2: From the evil of that which He created;
3: From the evil of the darkness when it is intense,
4: And from the evil of malignant witchcraft,
5: And from the evil of the envier when he envieth.
Brief Explanation
· This Surah was revealed along with Surah Al Nas in response to the magic spell that was cast upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by a hypocrite Jew that lived in Madina.
· This spell caused the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to be confused and not remember whether he had done a thing when he had done it or not done a thing when he had not done it. Therefore at times he would do something he had already done or not remember to do something he should have done and so on.
· The Sahaba’s suspected that someone had cast a spell on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not accuse anyone without being 100% certain and therefore let the matter pass without passing judgement on anyone. This was due to his truthful and just character and his mercy towards even those who opposed him.
· The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) then saw in a dream that a spell had been cast through knots that were tied to his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed hair and placed inside a well.
· The Angel Gibril (AS) came down with these two Surah’s that were revealed as a cure and remedy to the spell but also a protection from all types of evil that exists.
· The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) found this well and the hair with the knots and recited the two Surah’s on it to remove the spell.
Verse by Verse
· Verse one begins with the attribute of Lordship of Allah (SWT). This shows that Allah is the one capable and suitable for looking after his creation and his slaves.
· Then it mentions the Daybreak – this represents the coming of light and the disappearance of darkness. It represents the dawn of goodness and the disappearance of evil.
· The essence of the Verse is to seek refuge in Allah, who is the Lord of the Daybreak, from the following:
· The first thing that Allah asks us to seek protection from is evil in all its forms.
· This verse seeks the protection of Allah from all types of evil, be it physical, mental, or spiritual.
· It is a comprehensive request to Allah to protect one from every type of evil that exists (or that was created by Allah).
· The second thing Allah teaches us to seek protection from is the darkness of the night and the evils associated with that.
· This refers to the late night when evil is most rife and when the shayatin are roaming the streets in large numbers looking for people to lead astray. This is why the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him) is reported to have instructed people to close their doors and windows at night and keep the children inside the house.
· This verse is seeking protection from that evil of the night when it is dark.
· The third thing Allah asks us to seek protection from is magic and witchcraft.
· This verse is directly related to the incident that took place with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and refers to the magic of witchcraft and other types of magic that may affect a human being.
· Allah tells us to seek protection from these things which means that they are real and can bring real harm to us.
· The fourth and final thing that Allah tells us to seek protection from in this Surah is from the envy and jealousy of those who envy.
· This includes things like the ‘evil eye’ and the protection from envious people seeking the ruin of others.

Salam,
I believe it was revealed after the Migration of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to Medina. Probably later on in his life when the Jews started hostility towards the Muslims. I am not aware of an exact date of revelation. And Allah knows best.
Was Salam
Jashim
Salam,
I am not sure about the date it was revealed but I do know the incident. As we know that our Holy Prophet p.b.u.h was extremely sick. A spell had been cast on him by putting a knot in his hair and this hair was thrown in a well. And this is why Allah revealed this Surah.
when was it revaeled
