[Mufti Taqi Uthmani Translation]

Reason for revelation

  • This Surah was revealed in response to the enmity of Abu Lahab towards the Prophet (peace be upon him) and Islam.
  • After the Prophet (peace be upon) summoned Quraysh at Al-Safa mountain to call them to Islam and warn them of the punishment of Allah, Abu Lahab dispersed the crowd and cursed the Prophet (peace be upon him) as a result of which this Surah was revealed about him.

Brief Explanation

1. Perish the two hands of Abū Lahab, and perish he!

This is a curse directed at Abu Lahab and was revealed during his lifetime.

Abu Lahab scolded the Prophet (peace be upon him) when he invited Quraysh to Islam at Mount Safa and continued to be an avid enemy of Islam until his death.

The curse was fulfilled in his lifetime as he died from a deadly disease that made him unbearable to the people so they locked him away until he passed away.

The curse will further be fulfilled in the hereafter when he is thrown into the fire of Hell.

2. Neither his wealth benefited him, nor what he earned.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned Abu Lahab about his punishment, Abu Lahab responded by saying that he will use his wealth and sons to ransom himself in the hereafter. As a result Allah clarified for him that neither his great wealth nor his children can bring any benefit to him or save him from the punishment of Allah.

3. He will soon enter a Fire, full of flames,

His fate is in the fire of hell in the hereafter, and this fire will be full of raging flames.

4. and his wife as well,-the wicked carrier of firewood.

His wife was also like him in her enmity towards Islam and the Muslims. She used to stir trouble between Muslims and disbelievers by telling one false tales from the other to cause discord.

It is also reported that she used to throw rubble and thorns on the path to the mosque which the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to take to go to the mosque.

This verse states that Abu Lahab’s wife will be with him in the hellfire in the hereafter.

The reference to ‘carrier of firewood’ is made because she used to carry firewood on her back that were tied to a halter of palm fibre from her neck .

5. Around her neck, there is (a collar of iron, like) a well-twisted rope.

(Will have upon her neck a halter of palm fibre) and this halter strangulated her and she died as a result; it is also said that this means: she will have an iron chain on her neck’. [Tafsir ibn Abbas]

This is a reference to the method that she used to carry the fire wood and it is reported in some reports that one day this palm fibre made rope strangled her and suffocated her while she was carrying the wood and this is how she died.

One of the punishments that she will be made to endure in the hell fire is a collar of iron.

May Allah save us from the punishments of the fire and grant us His Jannah – Amin.
