Shaykha Munira al-Qubaysi (1933-2022)

Shaykha Munira al-Qubaysi (1933-2022)

“The Muslim world has lost a giant today. This morning Shaykha Munira Qubaysi passed away in Damascus at the age of 89 on December 26, 2022. She started a women’s movement in the 1960s whose impact would reverberate around the world for decades to come. She taught girls and women to love Allah in the most profoundly spiritual way that went beyond legalisms, rigidity, and harshness.

She was one of the first women to wear hijab while also pursuing a higher education in the 1950s at a time when going to college meant that women had to sacrifice their outward religious practice. She earned a Bachelor of Science in biology when religious families commonly did not let their daughters study past the sixth grade and had them married early. She drove her own car at a time when few men drove, let alone women in hijab. She even became famous for a while in the 1970s for being the only covered woman in Damascus who drove.

She modeled to an entire generation of women that they could be pious and devout while also caring for families, attaining the highest level of education in universities, and having a career. Her closest students were erudite Islamic scholars who published exceptional works in sira, each of the four schools of fiqh, hadith, two large volumes of khutbas for all occasions, theology, and various other subjects. Her closest students were not only learned women in the Qur’an who spent their nights in pious devotion, but they were also physicians, professors, schoolteachers, principals, lawyers, pharmacists, and engineers in the daytime.

She followed the model of Khadija and believed that it was important for women to have their own source income so that women preachers, teachers, and guides could do their work without depending on their religious communities for financial support. She established a network of schools that served as a safety net for thousands of unmarried women who needed to support themselves and married women who wished to contribute to society beyond the walls of their home. Her network of schools ranged from pre-school through high school and extended well beyond the borders of her homeland. Shaykha Munira’s schools transformed several generations of boys and girls. Boys who grew up seeing kind, intelligent, accomplished, pious, and devout women who taught them to love their faith in school, grew into men who would respect their wives, mothers, and sisters. Girls who grew up seeing strong, intelligent, kind, and pious women in school, gained confidence in their faith and saw a model for what Muslim women could achieve.

Her success in building schools and hospitals (one of her students established a women’s hospital for women run by women) is also important to understand within the context of the modern history of Syria in which quality modern education and healthcare was mostly run by foreign missionaries living in Syria since at least the nineteenth century. Shaykha Munira’s response to the negative impact of these schools on the identity of Syrian Muslims by establishing competing institutions that were indigenous to the region while maintaining the same and often superior standards of service, significantly shifted Syrian urban culture which had become heavily colonized by French cultural ideals by the 1960s.

Regularly studying, reciting, and learning the Qur’an are foundational spiritual practices that form the bedrock for Shaykha Munira’s movement. While at the same time, joy, fun, and love are essential components of her educational curriculum of imparting faith to children. Shaykha Munira’s students taught children with so much joyful creativity, that learning the Qur’an became associated with singing, sweets, friendship, parties, and field trips in the collective memories of kids. Spending the summers with friends learning the Qur’an and stories about their faith became highlights of each year for the generations of youth who were transformed in the process.

As her work continued for decades, her fame became known around the world and women came from the corners of the earth to spend time in Damascus and learn from the students she mentored into scholars and spiritual mentors in their own right. Women from the United States, United Kingdom, all of the Arab world, almost all countries in Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, Turkey and even from places as far as the Comoros Islands came in droves to learn from the women scholars of Damascus, many of whom whose presence alone was transformative to the soul.

Her humility and vigilance to remain unknown may cause many to overlook the extent of her global influence during the seventy years of her work. However, it would not be an exaggeration to state that Shaykha Munira al-Qubaysi was one of the most formative Muslims who shaped the Islam of the twentieth century. Some outsiders to her movement with limited knowledge labeled her students by her name. But this label was always firmly rejected by her saying that her students were nothing more than Muslim women whose scholarship, devotion, and achievements were a manifestation of Islam’s 1400-year tradition of beauty, piety, and learning. Her life’s work was dedicated to uplifting Muslims and Islam. It was never centered on any movement or personality. She taught her students to not waste time debating detractors and to never speak ill of others working for Allah. There is so much more that can be said, but I will end here for now.

Inna lillah wa inna ilayhi raji’un. Our hearts grieve, our eyes shed tears. But we only say what is pleasing to Allah.”

Book Launch: Makkah to Madinah – A Photographic Journey of the Hijrah Route

'If ye help him not, still Allah helped him when those who disbelieve drove him forth, the second of two; when they two were in the cave, when he said unto his comrade: Grieve not. Lo! Allah is with us. Then Allah caused His peace of reassurance to descend upon him and supported him with hosts ye cannot see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the nethermost, while Allah’s Word it was that became the uppermost. Allah is Mighty, Wise.' [Qur'an 9:40]

I was privileged to be at the book launch of ‘Makkah to Madinah – A Photographic Journey of the Hijrah Route’ on the evening of Friday 27 March 2015 at the Royal Geographic Society in Kensington.

The Photobook by Dr Abdullah Al Kadi documents in great detail the  Hijrah Journey that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, took from Makkah to Madinah.

The event was chaired by historian Bettany Hughes with presentations from Dr AlKadi and Photographer Peter Sanders. The evening closed with a reception and book signing with Dr AlKadi.

Dr Abdullah AlKadi‘Dr. Alkadi is the Vice Rector for Studies, Development and Community Services, as well as being a Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at the College of Architecture and Planning at the University of Dammam in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. He is the author of several books covering diverse topics such as the use of GIS applications on social development in urban areas, to analysis of the planning characteristics of urban mosques at the time of the Prophet in Madinah. Currently, Dr. Alkadi continues to explore and expand his research not only on the Hijrah Route, but other ancient pathways as well.’

I arrived late at the event due to unforeseen circumstances that afternoon on a return journey from Bognor Regis. As a result I missed a good chunk of Dr AlKadi’s presentation. What I did catch was him documenting through pictures the difficulty he and his team had to endure to find and detail all the places that the Prophet, peace be upon him, and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased him, trekked through on their momentous journey from Makkah to Madinah.

They uncovered many new milestones that marked the way, reaching some areas that were only accessible by foot, and hand digging various milestones and artefacts from underground. Along the way they uncovered ancient writings on rocks that predate even the Islamic Period in Arabia.

Dr AlKadi has  had all of his new findings documented with the relevent Tourism and Archeology department within the Government of Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Alkadi explains: “Makkah to Madinah is the culmination of several years of research driven by the simple desire to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Hijrah. In the course of this study, I have conducted dozens of field expeditions, collecting data, recording GPS coordinates, identifying landmarks, calculating distances, and covering as much as possible the entire route by foot. I have also examined every available resource from Hadith and Seerah literature and narrations, to historical documents, maps from the eighteenth century to the present. I have also conducted extensive interviews with local residents to glean information handed down through generations.”

“After analysing, synthesising, and cross-checking the information from this research, I have by the grace of Allah realised my original goal: to determine as precisely as possible the exact route of the Prophet’s Hijrah.”

After Dr AlKadi Peter Sanders took to the stage. He mirrored what Dr AlKadi had said and stated that in all his years of travelling to and photographing Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Sites, he could not believe that the sites uncovered by Dr AlKadi actually existed.

Although he was only on the journey for part of the way he found the whole experience spiritually uplifting knowing that they were walking on the exact same path that the Prophet, peace be upon him, had trodden.

Peter also mentioned the sites that were hard to reach and had to be gotten to on foot and commended Dr Al Kadi’s commitment and vigour in completing those journeys on foot. Peter summarised that the landscapes that they visited and saw was like seeing the Artistry of Allah in His creation.

IMG_20150330_191239Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, who was also present at the launch, wrote the forward to the book.  It was through Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and his audio tapes in the 90s that I first heard of Dr AlKadi, and I was glad that I finally got a chance to meet him in 2015! Alhamdu Lillah. He writes in his forward to the book:

In a just world, this exaustive effort would be seen as a groundbreaking masterwork, and would be discussed and celebrated by historians of humanity worldwide. But our world is far from just, and Shaykh Abdullah may have to wait for the Hijrah to that truly just world for his work to be acknowledged and rewarded. For now, may our gratitude suffice.

After the presentations was a brief Q&A conducted by the chair which was followed by the reception and book signing.

Dr AlKadi signing my copy of his book with the inscription: 'Preserving History for the Future Generations.'

The book can be purchased from all good bookstores and online through Amazon and the publisher’s own website: http://orient-east.com/buy

I would like to end by thanking brother Masud Ahmed Khan for posting the details of the event on his Facebook feed, without which I would not have known of the event. I would also like to thank Helen Lewis of literallypr.com for extending the invite to me and giving me the opportunity to meet such great personalities from the Islamic World.

Prophet Jesus (Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him) The Qur’anic Account

Excerpts from the Qur’an based on the Stories of the Prophets by Imam Ibn Kathir. Translation of the Qur’an based on Marmaduke Pickthall’s translation.

Introduction

I am reposting this from a post that I published back in 2007 as I believe that the Qur’anic account of the life of Jesus (peace be upon him) needs to be told and re-told to clarify some of the mysteries surrounding Jesus (peace be upon him) and to reclaim him as a Prophet of the Muslims.

Jesus is one of the revered Messengers of Go. Allah has mentioned the story of Mary and Jesus in many parts of the holy Qur’an. Below are some excerpts taken from the Qur’an to illustrate the Qur’anic narrative on the story of Jesus.

As this is the season of remembering Jesus I hope the following will be useful for both Christians and Muslims to reflect upon the story of this great Prophet of God.

Please refer to the ‘Stories of the Prophets’ by Ibn Kathir for a full account of the Muslim version of the tale.
