Sarah Joseph is Editor & CEO of emel media. Having grown up in one of the world’s top model agencies, Sarah converted to Islam at the age of 16. A powerful and popular public speaker, she has lectured on Islam globally for over 20 years. 

Sarah was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 2004 for her services to interfaith dialogue and the promotion of women’s rights. She is listed as one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by Georgetown University and the Royal Jordanian Strategic Studies Centre.

Her founding and editorship of emel in 2003 was a turning point in Muslim media. It created a paradigm shift in the way Muslims were portrayed and were marketed to.

Sarah’s Facebook page, which has a large global following, declares her passion “to get people to recognise their shared humanity, and our common responsibility to this Earth.” She manages this through her work with emel Media Group, but also through other avenues, including her regular ‘Pause for Thought’ on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show – Britain’s most popular radio show.

Sarah’s work in the Muslim community and with emel Media Group means she has a wealth of knowledge and expertise which she uses to great effect to advise on the needs of Muslims to government and corporate bodies, as well as public and private institutions. Through these endeavours Sarah has become a leading expert on the Muslim Lifestyle market.

A self-confessed perfectionist who absolutely loves her work, Sarah is the proud mother of three young children; she keeps chickens, and supports Tottenham Hotspur.

Mufti [Abu Abdillah] Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari is a young, traditionally trained scholar who studied in different parts of the world. Born in Leicester, UK, and raised under the guidance of his illustrious father, Shaykh Mawlana Adam, he started learning about Islam from a very young age and memorized the entire Qur’an at a very tender age of nine. He initially studied the Arabic language and various other traditional Islamic sciences including Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), Hadith and Fiqh at Dar al-Uloom, Bury, UK, under many Shuyukh notably: Shaykh Muhammad Yusuf Motala and the late Shaykh al-Hadith Islam ul Haq, and thus received authorizations (ijazahs) in various books including the six major collections of Hadith. He also received Ijazah in Hadith from the late Grand Mufti of India, Shaykh Mahmud al-Hasan Gangohi, and underwent a one year course of specialization in the science of issuing religious/legal verdicts (Fatwa). Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada, born in 1946 in Jhang, Pakistan, is a graduate of DMG Bhera and the University of the Punjab (Pakistan). His qualifications include Adib, ‘Alim and Fadil ‘Arabi, BA (English), MA (Islamic Studies), MA (Arabic) and MOL.

Inspired by his teacher, mentor and spiritual guide, the late Diya’ al-Ummat, Justice Shaykh Muhammad Karam Shah al-Azhari (Allah be pleased with him), he founded the educational establishment, Jamia Al-Karam, in 1985 and the Al-Karam Secondary School in 1995. At present he is also Chairman of Muslim Charity; helping the needy worldwide, Executive Director of Al-Karam Trust (London), Founder of Al-Karam Publications and Patron of the Al-Karam Scholars Association (AKSA). He is also a Founder Member of the British Muslim Forum and President of the UK Branch of the World Association for Al-Azhar Graduates (WAAG). Ustadha Iffet Rafeeq completed her classical ‘Aalimah course in the UK, topping both male and female students in every exam she took! She gained bessings from part time courses under Sheikh Atabec Shukurov Nasafi and Shaykh Burhan. Whilst studying she was appointed a role as a teacher and spiritual counsellor for reverts by her Ustadh. After graduating she was 1 of 3 students gifted a scholarship for Al Azhar university in Cairo.

Once her Intense Arabic Grammar course was completed she returned to the UK to teach Islamic theology at City Hasanat College, whilst completing her Businesses Management diploma and also continuing to study under the guidance of Shaykh Zain ul Aqtab Siddiqui at the Suyuti Institute

She is a co-founder of Dust To Diamonds, a Da’wah and Counselling Organisation, which can be found on YouTube.

Ustadha Iffet has achieved so much in a few years; her only wish is to study, teach, and serve the Ummah of Rasulullah SallAllahu ‘Alayhi wa Sallam.

Shaykh Haytham Tamim is the primary teacher at Utrujj, and its founder. He has studied Islamic law for over 20 years. He has accreditation in interpretation and sciences of the Qur’an, Prophetic sayings (hadith) and jurisprudence (fiqh) from the scholars of Lebanon and Syria. He served as a lecturer of comparative jurisprudence for many years at the Islamic University of Beirut. He has also served as lecturer of hadith and the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) (seerah) at the Azhar Lubnan Academy, Lebanon.

As well as verifying over 20 books, his specialities include comparative jurisprudence, principles of jurisprudence (usool ul fiqh) and hadith. He is the director of the “Shariah Solutions Ltd” A consultancy firm in Islamic Finance and is on the Shari’ah supervisory board for Gatehouse Bank PLC (London), He has delivered numerous courses and lectures in Islamic finance including an annual conference with leading Islamic finance scholars.

He provides counselling and independent consultancy services for Muslim and non-Muslim organisations both in person and via the internet. He has appeared on both Islam Channel and Shari’ah TV channel. He has been a guest speaker on Islamic radio stations throughout the UK responding to questions on Islamic law and living Islam in the modern context. He has also delivered a range of seminars and courses on Islamic Finance.

Sheikha Selina graduated with a Bachelors degree (BEd) in Primary Education, CELTA and PTLLS from London. She also completed a Diploma in Arabic Language and a Bachelors degree (BA) in Usul-Ad-Din and Usul-al-Fiqh in Arabic medium from the European Institute of Islamic Sciences in France. While studying Shariah she also completed an intensive Tajwid course on Ibn al-Jazari, a classical Tajwid text, and studied Tajwid extensively under a number of male and female Tajwid scholars. In particular, Sheikh Said Bouhdifi who obtained Ijazah for 10 recitations (Qira’at) from Sheikh Ayman Suaid and from Sheikh Abdul Munim As-Shalati. She also studied under Sheikh Farid and Sheikha Reihab (who both obtained Ijazah in 10 Qira’at from Sheikh Ayman), as well as Sheikh Mabruk Sheikha Muna and Kawsar (who both obtained Ijazah from Sheikh Ayman).

Sheikha Selina had been teaching Tajwid, Aqidah, Fiqh and other Islamic Sciences in the UK in various courses. In particular, she has taught in the Tartil courses (Beautifying Recitation), Itqan courses (Perfecting Recitation), Nafar courses (Understanding Islam) and in Knowledgeseekers courses (Islamic Sciences) for the last 7 years. She also teaches at the Beacon Institute, of which, she is one of the founding directors.

She is currently teaching the Arabic for Life Long Learning Programme and Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Programme for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. She also delivers talks on education and on other various Islamic issues at university campuses, Mosques and Islamic Centres. She is married with 3 children.

Sheikh Ahmad Muhammad Saad Ash-Shafi’ie Al-Azhari Al-Hasani was born into a family of scholars whose lineage goes back to the Prophet (salla Allahu alayh wa sallam) through his grandson Al-Hasan ibn Ali (radia Allahu anhu) in the northern Egyptian governorate of Monofiyyah, in the Nile Delta. The land of Monofiyyah is known to be the cradle of great scholars of Islam including people like Shaykh Al-Islam Ibrahim Al-Bayjouri, Imam Tajuddin As-Subki and Taqiyuddin As-Subki, Shaykh Al-Islam Ash-Shanawani, Shaykh Nour Ad-Din Al-Mihi, Shaykh Hasan Al-Quwaysini, Shaykh Ash-Shurunbilali and many others. As the custom of the family was to memorise Qur’an at an early age, Sheikh Saad completed the memorisation of the Holy Qur’an at the age of ten at the hands of his father and studied basic Arabic and Islamic sciences with focus on the sciences of Arabic language (‘Ulum Al-‘Arabiyyah) before enrolling into Al-Azhar system of schools where he studied from 1988 to 2004 graduating with a B.A. Honours in Islamic Studies in English and finishing his post graduate years. Professor Tariq Ramadan was born in Geneva, Switzerland in August 1962. He is the son of Sa’id Ramadan and Wafa Al-Bana, who was the eldest daughter of Hassan al Banna, who in 1928 founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. Gamal al-Banna, the liberal Muslim reformer is his great-uncle. His father was a prominent figure in the Muslim Brotherhood and was exiled by Gamal Abdul Nasser from Egypt to Switzerland, where Tariq was born.
