Advice to the Seekers – New Years Resolutions

Ustadha Anse Tamara Gray’s advice to the students at SeekersHub Toronto (Ayah and Hadith additions in italic below are mine and not of Ustadha Anse Tamara Gray):

  1. Be people of the Night Prayer (Tahajjud)

‘And during the night, wake up for Salāh of Tahajjud , an additional prayer for you. It is very likely that your Lord will place you at Praised Station.’ [Qur’an 17:79]

The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, “The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.” [Muslim]

  1. Devote at least one hour per week to Seeking Knowledge (‘ilm)

‘So High above all is Allah, the True King! And do not hasten with (reciting) the Qur’ān before its revelation to you is concluded, and say, “My Lord, improve me in knowledge.”’ [Qur’an 20:114]

The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, “He for whom Allâh desires great good, He grants him (superlative) understanding in the Religion.” [Part of a longer Hadith from Bukhari and Muslim]

  1. Spend at least one hour per week giving to the community (Khidmah)

‘The believers, male and female, are friends to each other. They bid virtue and forbid vice and establish Salāh and pay Zakāh and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those are the ones whom Allah will bless with mercy. Surely, Allah is Powerful, Wise.’ [Qur’an 9:71]

The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him, his family, and companions) said, “Allah will relieve anyone who relieves a believer of one of the afflictions of this world, of one of the afflictions of the Day of Rising. Allah will give ease in this world and the Next to anyone who eases the hardship of another. Allah will veil anyone who veils another Muslim in this world and the Next. Allah will help His slave as long as His slave is helping his brother.” [Muslim]

What better way to start the New Year than to pledge to commit to each of the above. Imagine if we all made the small steps mentioned above, what difference it could make to our lives and the lives of those around us.

May Allah give us Tawfiq – Ameen

Human-Kind

Human-Kind

As 2014 ends and 2015 begins

I think to myself, where have I been?

What have I done? How have I grown?

What deeds were done? What seeds were sown?

In life there is no pause, rewind or forward,

Just continuous play, onwards and upward.

Treasure the moments, for once gone, won’t return.

Grow with the passing of time, as the clocks continue to turn.

What is our plan for the future?

What will we leave behind?

Not more of the same, I hope,

Let us be more Human-Kind.

Places to Visit in Makkah – Jabal Thur

Jabal Thur

‘If ye help him not, still Allah helped him when those who disbelieve drove him forth, the second of two; when they two were in the cave, when he said unto his comrade: Grieve not. Lo! Allah is with us. Then Allah caused His peace of reassurance to descend upon him and supported him with hosts ye cannot see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the nethermost, while Allah’s Word it was that became the uppermost. Allah is Mighty, Wise.’ [Qur’an 9:40] Continue reading Places to Visit in Makkah – Jabal Thur

This is the place where it all began. Where Hidaya descended from the Heavens. Where the first revelations came down to a trembling man in awe of what had befallen him (SAW).

‘Read: In the name of thy Lord Who createth, Createth man from a clot. Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, Who teacheth by the pen, Teacheth man that which he knew not.’ [Qur’an 96: 1-5]

How must it have felt that night when the Angel came down in all his glory? A moment in time that was to be the beginning of something so great that it would conquer the hearts and minds of billions of people around the globe.

To this day people come here to experience the climb and see for themselves the tiny cave in which the Prophet (SAW) sojourned himself, and, to where his blessed wife regularly brought him food and drink.

May our footsteps fall on the blessed earth on which the Prophet (SAW) walked and may the barakah of such a place bring untold blessings in our life.
