The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are of the most blessed days in the entire Muslim Calendar and are on par with the last 10 nights of Ramadan in their importance and virtue. We should all treat these 10 days with the same level of motivation and vigour that we show to the last 10 nights of Ramadan. The following is brief exposition of some of the virtues of these days.

Allah (SWT) refers to these days when He says in His Book:

‘By the Dawn, And ten nights …’ [Qur’an 89, 1-2]

He also mention these as the ‘appointed’ days in the following verse:

‘Remember Allah through the appointed days…’ [Qur’an 2:203]

The Mufassirin (Commentators of the Qur’an) generally state that the above verses relate to the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. Continue reading The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

Places to Visit in Makkah – ‘Arafah

‘Then flow down from where the people flow, and seek forgiveness from Allah. Certainly Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.’  [Qur’an 2:199]

wukuf-arafah

‘Arafah or ‘Arafat is a plain of land approximately 22 kilometres from Makkah. It is here that the pilgrims spend the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah standing in Worship, Dhikr and Du’a.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“I stood here (at the foot of Jabal Rahmah) but the whole of ‘Arafah is a place of standing “

[Muslim]

The Hajj is not complete without the standing on ‘Arafah and therefore all pilgrims must spend a portion of the day on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah at the plain of ‘Arafah for their Hajj to be valid.

The day of ‘Arafah is the greatest day in the Islamic Calendar as it is on this day that Allah (SWT) forgives more people than he does in the entire year.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“There is no day in which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of Arafat. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, ‘What is the desire of these (servants of mine)?’”

[Muslim and Others]

There is a Masjid in ‘Arafah called Masjid Namira and it is located on the site where the Prophet (peace be upon him) camped for a while before entering ‘Arafah and where he delivered his farewell speech.

‘Arafah also has a small hilltop known as Jabal Rahmah and it is at the foot of this hill where the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have prayed and made Du’a during his standing in ‘Arafah.
