Surah Al Fatiha Part 1
·The book and speech of Allah.
·Listen to it as Allah is Speaking directly to you.
·It is our guidance in this world and our intercessor in the next.
Five objectives of the Qur’an:
·To teach Tawhid (monotheism)
·To give warning of punishment (if we do wrong) and to give a promise (of reward to those who do right)
·To teach us the essence of worship
·To purify our heart and soul
·To teach us the lessons (stories) of those who went before us
Some Hadith about the virtues of the Qur’an:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“No people gather in a house of the houses of Allah reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves except that serenity descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allah makes mention of them to those with Him”..” [Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and others]
“The best of you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.” [Related by Imam Ahmed]
“Whoever reads a letter of the Qur’an will have ten rewards and I do not say that alif lam mim is one letter but rather that alif is a letter lam is a letter mim is a letter”. [At-Tirmidhi]

Number of Verses: 7
Al Fatiha – The Opening
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds,
The Beneficent, the Merciful.
Owner of the Day of Judgment,
Thee (alone) we worship; Thee (alone) we ask for help
Show us the straight path,
The path of those whom Thou hast favoured;
Not the (path) of those who earn Thine anger nor of those who go astray.
General Characteristics of the Surah:
·First complete Surah to be revealed
·First Surah of the Qur’an
·First Surah recited in every cycle of every prayer
·The Fatiha has around 33 names, including:
oFatiha Al Kitab – Opener of the Book
oSurah Al-Hamd – The Surah of Praise
oSab’a Al-Mathani – The oft-repeated seven
oUmm Al-Qur’an – Mother of the Qur’an
oAl-Kafiya – The Sufficient
oAl-Kanz – The Treasure House
oAsas Al-Qur’an – The basis of the Qur’an
oAl-Shifa – The Cure
·The Fatiha has within it the summary of the message of the entire Qur’an.
·The remainder of the Qur’an is an answer to the prayer made at the end of Al-Fatiha ‘Show us the straight path’.
·Allah (SWT) asks us in the Qur’an to seek refuge from Allah before the recitation of the Qur’an (16.98): ‘And when thou recitest the Qur’an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan the outcast.’
·In relation to the legal status of the Isti’adha, according to the consensus of the Ummah (the majority of the Scholars) it is Sunna to recite Audhu Billah and Bismillah before the recitation of the Qur’an.
·Isti’adha is used to ward off the devil before carrying out any action.
·The Isti’adha is followed by the Basmala.
·The Basmala is a way of seeking the blessing and pleasure of Allah before doing any act whether it be a mundane act or an act of worship.
·The Basmala is not a verse of Surah Al-Fatiha. It is a verse from Surah Al-Naml and is an independent verse of the Qur’an. However, it is to be recited before every Surah other than Surah Al-Tawbah.
