Wednesday Circle | 15 Second Reminders | 03: The Qualities of the Hypocrites

Yesterday at the Circle we concluded the brief explanation of verses 1-20 of Surah Al-Baqarah.

The first 5 verses of Surah Al Baqarah deal with the Believers (Muttaqun), the next 2 verses deal with the Disbelievers (Kafiroun), and the next 13 verses deal with the Hypocrites (Munafiqun) and these are the worst of people.

Places to Visit in Makkah – Muzdalifa

‘There is no sin on you that you seek the grace of your Lord (by trading). Later, when you flow down from ‘Arafāt, recite the name of Allah near Al-Mash‘ar-ul-Harām (the Sacred Monument), and recite His name as He has guided you, while before it, you were among the astray.’ [Qur’an 2:198]

EXS0

Muzdalifa is a valley between ‘Arafah and Mina. Stretching just over 4 kilometres long, it is where the Pilgrims gather in the night of the 9th of Dhul Hijjah after having spent it’s day in ‘Arafah.

Pilgrims spend the night here and many of them collect their pebbles for pelting the Shaytan at the Jamaraat.

There is a Masid here called Masjid Mash’ar Al-Haram which is located on the spot where the Prophet (peace be upon him) supplicated in response to the injunction of the above verse from Surah Al Baqarah 2:198.

Muzdalifa is also known as Al Jam’, meaning joining or gathering, because it is where the pilgrims join the Maghrib and ‘Esha prayers. It is also known by this name because it’s a place of gathering.

Places to Visit in Makkah – ‘Arafah

‘Then flow down from where the people flow, and seek forgiveness from Allah. Certainly Allah is Most-Forgiving, Very-Merciful.’  [Qur’an 2:199]

wukuf-arafah

‘Arafah or ‘Arafat is a plain of land approximately 22 kilometres from Makkah. It is here that the pilgrims spend the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah standing in Worship, Dhikr and Du’a.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“I stood here (at the foot of Jabal Rahmah) but the whole of ‘Arafah is a place of standing “

[Muslim]

The Hajj is not complete without the standing on ‘Arafah and therefore all pilgrims must spend a portion of the day on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah at the plain of ‘Arafah for their Hajj to be valid.

The day of ‘Arafah is the greatest day in the Islamic Calendar as it is on this day that Allah (SWT) forgives more people than he does in the entire year.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“There is no day in which Allah sets free more souls from the fire of hell than on the day of Arafat. And on that day Allah draws near to the earth and by way of exhibiting His Pride remarks to the angels, ‘What is the desire of these (servants of mine)?’”

[Muslim and Others]

There is a Masjid in ‘Arafah called Masjid Namira and it is located on the site where the Prophet (peace be upon him) camped for a while before entering ‘Arafah and where he delivered his farewell speech.

‘Arafah also has a small hilltop known as Jabal Rahmah and it is at the foot of this hill where the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have prayed and made Du’a during his standing in ‘Arafah.

Dhikr – Easy on the Tongue, Heavy on the Scale

Dhikr – Your Easy Path to Paradise

O you who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. [Qur’an 33:41]

The People of Paradise will not regret except one thing alone: the hour that passed them by and in which they made no remembrance of Allah. [Al-Bayhaqi]

Dhikr, or the Remembrance of Allah, is a very important aspect of our Deen. It encapsulates the essence of worship and should form a key part of all of our actions. But not only this, the rewards for Dhikr are so immense and lofty that it provides us with an easy way to multiply our rewards in our ‘bank accounts’ in Heaven.

Dhikr provides for us a means with which our path to paradise can be simpler and easier, provided that we are fulfilling our obligations (Fara-id). A few examples of Adhkar that are simple on the tongue but heavy on the scales are noted below.

Updated: The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are of the most blessed days in the entire Muslim Calendar and are on par with the last 10 nights of Ramadan in their importance and virtue. We should all treat these 10 days with the same level of motivation and vigour that we show to the last 10 nights of Ramadan. The following is brief exposition of some of the virtues of these days.

https://instagram.com/p/7bGmaXsPqv/

Allah (SWT) refers to these days when He says in His Book:

‘By the Dawn, And ten nights …’ [Qur’an 89, 1-2]

He also mention these as the ‘appointed’ days in the following verse:

‘Remember Allah through the appointed days…’ [Qur’an 2:203]

The Mufassirin (Commentators of the Qur’an) generally state that the above verses relate to the first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah. Continue reading Updated: The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah

The Pride of Hijab

Pride of the Hijab

GMB Akash's avatarGMB AKASH

The wearing of the hijab reflects the modern Muslim woman’s independence, her new world attitude in which she has a choice in whether she follows this old tradition or not. Her hijab displays her confidence to live life on her own terms and communicates the message that she is respected, intelligent and pious person in her culture. She is also purposefully not drawing attention to herself vis-à-vis the male population in certain Muslim country such as Bangladesh.

Beside religious value, this piece of folded head scarf can tell much about a woman. So, what does your hijab say about you? The colour, the style, the adornments, if any, all refelcts the individual. There could be strips or flowers that represent the softness, the brightness. These choices allow a woman to express who she is. The hijab sends clear signals about a Muslim woman and her personality. The increasing trend of…

I grew up seeing my ancestors’ orange beards or hair. It is so common in our culture that I was hardly curious to know why older Muslim people colour their hair, beards or moustaches. With time I learned and found out that it was very natural to know  about the importance of henna in Muslim Culture.

But for the first time I realized and wanted to know about the real motivation of different individual Muslim men and women for dyeing their grey hair. The first time I started asking the question was when many of my foreigner friends asked me about it frequently during their visits in Bangladesh. Then I started noticing that this colour is making this older generation different. So I started asking the Muslim older generation why they colour their grey beards or hair and what is it that they are so fond of?
